Earth Day: monitoring, measuring, and committing over time in Madagascar

Each year, April 22 is dedicated to celebrating Earth Day. On this occasion, Groupe JMI highlights a key stage of its environmental commitments: monitoring mangrove reforestation initiatives carried out in Madagascar.

While planting trees is an important first step, their long-term development is just as crucial.

A field-driven initiative

Since 2023, Réfrigépêche Ouest and Réfrigépêche Est, in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy, have been conducting a mangrove reforestation campaign in Madagascar.

On October 27, 2024, we launched a mangrove reforestation campaign in Anjiabe Ambilobe, in northern Madagascar. The targeted area covers 18 hectares.

This reforestation project contributes to both the restoration and preservation of mangrove ecosystems.

As a reminder, mangroves are vital ecosystems for many marine species, including shrimp and lobsters. These areas serve as nurseries for reproduction and juvenile growth, ensuring the sustainability of marine populations.

This initiative reflects a clear intention: to act locally, in alignment with the environmental realities of the region, while contributing to biodiversity preservation.

One year later: measuring impact

Recently, field monitoring of the plantations was carried out.

This observation work allows us to concretely assess the results of this initiative.

Today, 70% of the planted trees have survived.

This figure reflects both the resilience of the plantations and the challenges inherent to such initiatives, including climate conditions, soil quality, and other environmental factors.

Groupe JMI builds lasting impact

Through this monitoring process, Groupe JMI reaffirms its commitment to preserving local ecosystems.

By integrating ongoing control and support for plantations, the Group is part of a continuous improvement approach.

Together, let’s keep taking care of our planet!
