Launch of the Varuna Project for Réfrigépêched

Together for the Restoration of Corals at Île aux Prunes

Réfrigépêche, in collaboration with the NGO Tany Ifandovana, is proud to announce the launch of the Varuna project, an innovative program dedicated to the restoration of coral reefs around Île aux Prunes. This 12-month project aims to preserve and restore these fragile marine ecosystems, which are essential for biodiversity and the well-being of local communities.

The Importance of Coral Reefs in Marine Ecosystems

Coral reefs are among the most valuable and diverse ecosystems on the planet. They host around 25% of marine biodiversity while covering only 0.1% of the ocean’s surface. In addition to providing habitat for a multitude of marine species, these reefs play a crucial role in protecting coastlines from erosion and storms. They also serve as a source of income for many local communities through fishingtourism, and other economic activities.

However, coral reefs are currently severely threatened by climate change, pollution, overfishing, and other human-induced factors. Ocean acidification, warming waters, and destructive fishing practices have led to the rapid decline of corals, endangering not only marine biodiversity but also the livelihoods of millions of people.

The Varuna Project: A Response to These Environmental Challenges

In the face of these challenges, the Varuna project aims to be a beacon of hope. This innovative program seeks to restore the coral reefs around Île aux Prunes, an iconic site that has been severely impacted by the degradation of marine ecosystems. The primary goal of this initiative is to restore the ecological balance of the reefs by recreating a habitat that is favorable to marine flora and fauna.

Over the 12 months of the project, Réfrigépêche and the NGO Tany Ifandovana will combine their expertise to carry out a series of concrete actions.

Towards a Future that Respects the Marine Environment

Together, they are committed to giving nature a second chance and working towards a marine environment that is in harmony with humans. This project embodies the hope for a future where protecting biodiversity will be a collective priority, for the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants.
