Sopromer: Madagascar’s Short Supply Chain
What is Sopromer?
Created in 1986 in Madagascar to address an issue with our three fisheries present in the territory: how to optimize the fishing of “by-catch” fish.
Sopromer: much more than a fish market
Sopemo aims to sell “by-catch” fish from shrimp fishing, as well as other seafood products from Madagascar, through a distribution network in Antananarivo and its surroundings.
“By-catch” fish are the fish that, despite our responsible fishing techniques, end up in our nets.
Much more than an environmental action, it is also a societal action.
This initiative, supported by the Ministry of Fisheries, allows for the sale of these fish that are not usually sold in large supermarkets.
In fact, the products are sold at cost price, allowing all Malagasy people to access fresh, quality products.
Today, Sopromer is:
- 230 people working there daily
- 46 fish markets
- 1,980 tons of trawler-caught fish
- 178 tons of other seafood products
- Bags of small fish and fish fillets
- 1 premium fish market and 1 preparation workshop
